Hazard labeling
Find warning symbols and prevent accidents
In the EU, it is mandatory to label hazardous chemicals and products with warning symbols. The idea is that these warning symbols will eventually be used globally, making it easier for both businesses and consumers. Before June 2017, the warning symbols were square-shaped with an orange background. Today, they feature a vertical red frame with a white background.
Always make sure to pay attention to the warning symbols on labels when purchasing and using cleaning products and other common household items. Many products can pose a risk to both children and adults if not used and stored correctly.
Types of hazard labels for dangerous goods
Class 1 - Explosives

Class 2 - Gases

Class 3 - Flammable Liquids

Class 4 - Flammable Solids

Class 5 - Oxidizing Agents

Class 6 - Toxic & Infectious Substances

Class 7 - Radioactive Materials

Class 8 - Corrosive Substances

Class 9 - Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods

In addition to the 9 hazard classes, there are additional hazard labels for dangerous goods that are necessary for certain types of shipments, including transport of lithium batteries, dry ice, and items suitable only for air transport.
Prevent accidents: Turn the container upside down and read the label
Every year, accidents happen with products marked with warning symbols. These products may contain substances that can cause skin corrosion, serious eye damage, fire or explosion, harm the environment, and trigger allergic reactions. Therefore, it is important to always read the instructions on the label.
Many household products are marked with warning symbols. The warning symbols on the label will tell you how to store the products and protect yourself when using them – as well as how to dispose of any leftovers. It’s not just products like gasoline, acetic acid, and mineral turpentine that require attention due to warning symbols. The symbols can also be found on everyday household items such as toilet cleaners, dishwasher tablets, laundry detergents, cleaning agents, drain cleaners, and impregnation sprays. Even environmentally certified and asthma- or allergy-labeled products may in some cases be marked with warning symbols.
Responsibility for hazard labels on goods
Each hazard class has its own associated hazard labels. This helps shippers and receivers identify the associated risks and ensures compliance with packaging and transportation throughout the shipping process.
It is the shipper’s responsibility to ensure that all required hazard labels and any relevant markings are correctly placed on each package containing dangerous goods. If an outer packaging is used, the hazard labels and markings on each individual package must be reproduced on the outside.
Size of hazard label
Depending on the package size, appropriate hazard labels and markings must be used – the most common size being 100 mm x 100 mm. Information on label sizes can be found in the relevant regulations for transporting dangerous goods for the chosen mode of transport.
