In the EU, it is mandatory to label hazardous chemicals and products with warning symbols. The idea is that the same warning symbols will eventually be used globally, making it easier for both businesses and consumers. Before June 2017, the warning symbols were square with an orange background. Today they have a vertical red frame with a white background.

Always pay attention to the warning symbols on labels when buying and using cleaning products and other common household products. Many products can pose a risk to both children and adults if not used and stored correctly.
Types of hazard labels for dangerous goods
Class 1 - Explosives
Class 2 - Gases
Class 3 - Flammable liquids
Class 4 - Flammable solids
Class 5 - Oxidizing substances
Class 6 - Toxic & infectious substances
Class 7 - Radioactive materials
Class 8 - Corrosives
Class 9 - Miscellaneous dangerous goods
In addition to the 9 hazard classes, there are additional dangerous goods labels that are required for certain types of shipments, including the transportation of lithium batteries, dry ice and items suitable only for air freight.
Prevent accidents: Turn the container over and read the label
Every year there are accidents involving products marked with warning symbols. These products may contain substances that can cause skin burns, serious eye damage, fire or explosion, damage the environment and cause allergic reactions. Therefore, it is important to always read the instructions on the label.
Many household products are marked with warning symbols. The warning symbols on the label tell you how to store the products and protect yourself when using them – as well as how to dispose of any leftovers. It’s not only products like benzine, acetic acid and white spirit that require attention because of the warning symbols. The symbols can also be found on common household products such as toilet cleaners, dishwashing tablets, washing powder, detergents, drain cleaners and waterproofing sprays. Even eco-labeled and asthma and allergy labeled products may in some cases be marked with warning symbols.
Responsibility for hazard labels on goods
Each hazard class has its own associated hazard labels. This helps shippers and receivers identify the associated risks and ensure packaging and transportation compliance is maintained throughout the shipping process.
It is the shipper’s responsibility to ensure that all required hazard labels and any relevant markings are correctly placed on each package containing dangerous goods. If an overpack is used, the hazard labels and markings on each package must be reproduced on the outside.
Size of the label
Depending on the package size, appropriate hazard labels and markings must be used – the most common size is 100 mm x 100 mm. Information on label sizes can be found in the relevant regulations for the transportation of dangerous goods for the chosen transport method.
