Point of exit scan, self-scan and self-service are common terms in the retail and service industry, especially in supermarkets and shops. Duty-free stores at airports are also increasingly adopting self-service solutions with point of exit scans. Another area of growth is unmanned stores, which are popping up in more places. Here, point of exit scans are used as an additional security element and often as a payment method that allows customers to leave the store with their purchases.

Exit scan involves customers scanning their items themselves, typically using a barcode scanner or mobile app, when they are ready to leave the store. This method is used to streamline the checkout process and reduce queuing time. Instead of having to place items on a conveyor belt at checkout, customers scan items as they shop. This allows customers to manage their own purchases and in some cases avoid checkout queues altogether. The customer’s scanned items are then checked at the exit of the store to ensure that everything has been paid for correctly.

In some cases, often in supermarkets, a receipt is also printed with a barcode that the customer must scan to be allowed to leave the self-service checkout area.
