RFID scan

RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification and it is a technology used to identify and track objects using radio waves. RFID scanners can read RFID tags, which contain a small chip and an antenna that communicates with the RFID reader via radio waves.

Increasing security

Where is RFID scanning used?

RFID is widely used in various industries and applications.

Logistics and supply chain: RFID is used to track and manage shipments of goods throughout the supply chain. It enables precise inventory management, shipment tracking and automation of logistics processes.

Retail: In retail, RFID is used to track inventory, reduce shrinkage and improve inventory management. It can also enable faster checkout by scanning multiple items at once.

Access control and security: RFID tags are used to grant access to buildings, parking lots and other secured areas. They are also used in access cards for public transportation and events.

Identification and authentication: RFID can be used to identify and authenticate people, animals or objects. For example, it is used in passports, identity cards, pet tags and product authentication tags.

How does RFID scanning work?

RFID tags: Items to be tracked are equipped with small RFID tags that contain a unique identifier and possibly other information. These tags can be passive, meaning they do not have their own power source and are activated by a reader, or active, where they have a built-in power source.

RFID readers: RFID readers are devices that send radio waves to RFID tags and receive the data that is returned. These readers can be stationary or handheld scanners and can be integrated into cash registers, gates or other systems.

RFID scanning: When an RFID tag comes within range of a reader, it is activated and its unique identifier is sent to the reader. The reader then detects this identifier and, depending on the configuration, can perform various actions such as recording a transaction, updating a database or triggering an alarm.

What are the benefits of RFID scanning?

The benefits of RFID scanning include faster and more accurate tracking of goods, automation of inventory management, the ability to track items in real-time and reduction of manual labor compared to traditional barcode systems. RFID scanning is used in many different industries, including retail, logistics, healthcare, transportation and manufacturing.

JENSEN SEEDS RFID CREATES TRACEABILITY

Danish manufacturer is technological first mover

The Danish seed company Jensen Seeds delivers more than 10,000 tons of seeds to its customers every year. Therefore, it is crucial that there are no errors in the production and sorting of the seeds. This is where the need arose for an RFID solution to track, locate and identify the process from grower to fully automated cleaning, sorting and packing.

“No one else in the industry uses RFID for process optimization the way we do, but more people are starting to see the potential and are looking our way.”

– Michael Olesen, IT & Systems Engineer at Jensen Seeds
