MY GROCERY STORE ØSTERILD
Young grocer breaks all sales records
In 2019, independent grocer Matias Paaske, who runs Min Købmand in Østerild, won the title of Dagrofa Grocer of the Year. The great honor comes after an impressive development of the store and a doubling of turnover in just two years. Electronic shelf labels help ensure that staff can focus on promotional activities.
The young grocer, Matias Paaske, started his career in the grocery industry as a young worker at Min Købmand in Østerild. Subsequently, he was employed by the Military Police in the Danish Armed Forces, when the local grocery store couple in the town’s Min Købmand announced just over two years ago that they wanted to retire and therefore put the store up for sale.
As a result, a local group of owners and citizens set about building a new store to replace the run-down store in Østerild. Matias Paaske had long dreamed of becoming self-employed, so he had no doubts when he was asked if he was interested in becoming a merchant for the new store. He brought with him good experience in management and communication from his time in the military police.
"We save a lot of time and we gain a lot more by being there for our customers instead of spending time on administrative tasks. With electronic shelf labels, we don't have to concentrate on price changes on our 5,000+ items."
MORE TIME FOR PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES
At the end of 2019, just two years after he started as a grocer, he was able to expand his CV with the title of “Grocer of the Year” in the chain – at just 26 years old. A great title that is due to an impressive development and upgrade of the store. Among other things, Matias Paaske has introduced electronic shelf labels, freeing up staff time for more promotional activities instead of having to change prices.
– We save a lot of time and we gain a lot more by being there for our customers instead of spending time on administrative tasks. With electronic shelf labels, we don’t have to concentrate on price changes on our 5,000 product numbers – it happens automatically,” explains Matias Paaske.
ON TRACK WITH NEW INITIATIVES
The sales figures also suggest that the young merchant is on the right track. In 2019, he came out with a turnover of over DKK 20 million excluding VAT. This is almost double the turnover of the old store. More sales space and more products have had a positive impact on growth. But an exciting assortment and special promotions also help to attract customers from nearby cities.
– For me as a grocer, it’s about continuing to develop the store and creating inspiring shopping experiences for customers so that they keep coming back, even if they have to drive a bit. That’s why we have a strong focus on special campaigns, we try out various new initiatives, and we continuously adapt our range to the local surroundings,” says Matias Paaske.
Min Købmand is part of the Dagrofa grocery group. The majority of the group’s stores are run by independent grocers. Nationwide, more than 200 Dagrofa stores (MENY, SPAR, Min Købmand and Let-Køb) have installed the Breece solution with electronic shelf labels.
