Spar grocery store breaks all records

The local Spar grocery store in Klitmøller is experiencing growing pains and has invested millions in an extensive modernization of the store over the past year. With almost doubling the store area and introducing new food concepts, the ambition is to become Klitmøller’s favorite shopping destination.

At Spar in Klitmøller, owner Mikael Konradsen has achieved extraordinary results – something that in 2018 also earned him a nomination for the prestigious international FMI Award, presented annually by the American Food Marketing Institute. Through 16 years as an independent Spar grocer in Klitmøller, Mikael Konradsen has tripled turnover and increased the number of employees from 15 to 25. Today, Spar Klitmøller is also an important part of the town’s development.

Recent years have seen a growth in the number of permanent residents in Klitmøller, and during the same period there has been a positive development on the tourist front. This development also places greater demands on shopping opportunities all year round, which has prompted the local Spar grocery store to make a million-dollar investment of almost DKK 10 million.

– The growth in the number of year-round residents and tourists has changed the requirements for local shopping opportunities. We now have more space and the store expansion helps to meet customer needs, says Mikael Konradsen, who runs the Spar store in Klitmøller.

"We listen to our customers and try as much as possible to meet their wishes for new products. The combination of this and the use of electronic shelf labels helps to give customers an even better shopping experience."

Electronic shelf labels and a better shopping experience

Since 2003, Mikael Konradsen has continuously expanded the store, which also has electronic shelf labels so that prices in the store are always up to date. At the same time, new offers can be quickly executed without the need for manual work from the staff. The latest – and much larger – investment also includes a clearer layout with more space between shelves and several new food concepts. All designed to give customers a better shopping experience.

– The development in Klitmøller in recent years also places new demands on special items on the shelves. We listen to our customers and try as far as possible to accommodate their wishes for new products so we can get them on the shelves. The combination of this and the use of electronic shelf labels helps to give customers an even better shopping experience,” says Mikael Konradsen.

The multi-million dollar investment is working – the extensive refurbishment has led to incredible growth, which can already be seen in the numbers at the modernized Spar grocery store, which has remained open throughout the refurbishment.

– I can see a big increase compared to last year, especially in areas such as fruit and vegetables, meat and beer, wine and spirits. We’ve also worked hard to make it happen,” Mikael Konradsen concludes.
