Logistics in Greenland: Central management ensures efficiency at Pisiffik

Greenland’s leading retail chain, Pisiffik, has improved the efficiency and operations of its stores by successfully solving logistics challenges. A key partner in this effort is IT company Delfi Technologieswhose barcode solution has proven to be crucial to the entire logistics puzzle around goods handling.

Pisiffik has over 800 employees and operates more than 50 stores in Greenland’s six largest cities, with a varied selection of food and non-food concepts ranging from supermarkets to clothing stores and furniture stores. The chain’s mission is based on the ambition to be the market leader in all concepts with focus on competitive prices, quality, selection & service.

Today, the chain’s concepts consist of the following: Pisiffik (supermarket), SPAR (groceries), Akiki (discount store), Pisattat (hardware), Torrak Fashion (clothing store), JYSK (bedding and furniture), ILVA (furniture), Elgiganten (electronics and white goods), NotaBene (outdoor and electronics), SuKu (handicrafts and home accessories), Sunset Boulevard (fast food), KK Engros and KK Cash & Carry (wholesale) and Pisiffik.gl – Greenland’s largest webshop.

Weather and distances require good planning

In Greenland’s challenging logistics and supply chain, where goods must be transported by ship or air freight and delivery times are long, it is necessary to plan orders far into the future to ensure the right assortment in stores. Unpredictable weather adds further complexity and can affect the delivery of goods to stores.

To optimize workflows and enable the chain’s employees to handle important tasks in the stores, it has been necessary to move essential functionality from the chain’s ERP/financial system to an app on mobile PDAs.

Delfi Technologies has therefore developed a barcode solution with software tailored to Pisiffik that serves as a valuable tool in employees’ daily lives. Via a mobile app, employees can perform tasks such as inventory counting, goods receipt and product lookup directly in the store.

Through the app, employees have access to all necessary information about the goods and it is also possible to move goods from one store to another if, for example, there is a need to move goods from one store to another.

Ability to help customers right away

The solution saves time and, according to Allan Mortensen, Store Manager at NotaBene, enables staff to help customers directly on site. NotaBene supplies the Greenlandic market with everything in outdoor, hunting, fishing and electronics.

– It is of great importance that we can access relevant product information wherever we are. It allows us to stay in the store and provide immediate assistance to customers,” says Allan Mortensen.

– In practical terms, this means that we have a kind of mini-computer in our hands with all the necessary information about our range. This means we don’t have to leave the store to search for information on a computer in the back room,” he continues.

Central control and reliability are key factors

The operation of the mobile solution is managed centrally from the IT department at Pisiffik’s head office via an MDM tool (Mobile Device Management), where new functionality, software updates, customization of user rights, etc. are taken care of and rolled out to the mobile devices in all stores.

IT Manager at Pisiffik, Kristian Aagaard, emphasizes the importance of IT solutions with central control in Greenland, where large distances to the stores and unpredictable weather conditions create major logistical challenges:

– Reliability and efficiency are two crucial elements in the unique and challenging Greenlandic environment. With such large distances between stores, having the necessary IT tools for centralized management is a prerequisite for success, he says and continues

– Our solution from Delfi Technologies plays a crucial role in smooth operations and logistics management in our stores and supports our goal of becoming a more data-driven company.

In addition to mobile PDAs and software Delfi Technologies also supplied digital price tags, barcode scanners, receipt printers and other barcode solutions to Pisiffik stores.
