Pisiffik Grønland
Greenland’s largest retail chain wants to improve logistics
In a country with vast distances and highly changeable weather, efficient logistics is a necessity. It’s also a natural focal point at the country’s largest retail chain, Pisiffik, which has implemented a range of barcode solutions from Delfi Technologies.
Greenland is the world’s largest island with a remarkable geography and size. Around 81% of its total area is covered by ice. This means that all transportation between towns or settlements in Greenland is by plane or ship.
In several parts of the country, however, it can be a problem to get ships to port during the winter. On several occasions, a ship has been unable to sail into port due to too much ice. For several months, you may therefore be without fresh supplies. However, when critical needs arise, Pisiffik makes sure to send goods by plane so that they arrive within a few days.
The vast majority of groceries are shipped from Denmark with a 2-3 week delivery time. However, items that can’t last that long – such as lettuce – are flown in, which drives up prices.
Pisiffik a/s is Greenland's leading retail chain with over 800 employees and 13 different store concepts, including more than 50 stores in Greenland's 6 largest cities. The chain also operates Greenland's largest webshop with more than 14,000 items online.
The road to a great customer experience
Pisiffik currently has more than 50 stores in Greenland’s 6 largest cities, ranging from supermarkets to clothing stores and furniture stores.
The chain currently operates the following concepts: Pisiffik (supermarket), SPAR (groceries), Akiki (discount store), Pisattat (hardware), Torrak Fashion (clothing store), JYSK & ILVA (bedding and furniture), Elgiganten (consumer electronics and white goods), NotaBene (outdoor and consumer electronics), SuKu (handicrafts and home accessories), Sunset Boulevard (fast food), KK Engros (wholesale).
With a vision to be Greenland’s preferred shopping destination, the employees work towards a clearly defined mission; “As modern grocers, we want to give the Greenlandic population a shopping experience that makes us the city’s preferred place to shop for food.”
The right products at the right price, as well as fast and efficient service at the checkout, are just some of the areas Pisiffik focuses on in order to deliver a great customer experience. Here the chain has received help from Delfi Technologies, which has provided the stores with everything from digital price tags to barcode scanners and mobile PDAs.
Digital price tags are indispensable
Pisiffik uses digital price tags in the chain’s grocery stores – Pisiffik, SPAR and Akiki. This allows them to automatically adjust all prices on store shelves to match weekly promotions or make daily adjustments in individual stores. The digital signage is also an indispensable tool in the work towards ensuring the consumer the cheapest and best prices in the country.
Due to the long lead times in a logistics and supply chain where everything has to be delivered by ship or air freight, goods have to be ordered far into the future. In addition, the unpredictable weather is an additional factor that has a major impact on the delivery of goods.
That’s why it’s common to see out-of-stock items on the shelves in stores. However, through signage directly on the digital price tags, Pisiffik can inform the customer that an item is out of stock – saving time for both the customer and store staff.
Tailor-made software solution for stores and warehouses
To save employee time and ensure optimal workflows in stores, Pisiffik has specially developed a barcode solution with mobile PDAs and software (Delfi X Cloud) that acts as an employee tool in everyday life.
On a mobile app customized for Pisiffik, employees can handle tasks such as inventory counting, receiving goods, and looking up items in the store. All important information is available here and it is also possible to move goods from one store to another if, for example, there is a need to move goods from one store to another.
Pisiffik also works according to a strategic sustainability initiative, where responsible consumption and reducing food waste are on the agenda. Through the use of mobile label printers, it is possible to label date products (with a discount label) at a reduced price so that food can be sold before the date expires.
