1D and 2D barcode scanners

Different application possibilities

1D/2D scan

1D and 2D barcode scanners are tools used to read barcodes, but they differ in the type of barcodes they can handle and their applications.

Fast and reliable reading

1D barcode scanners

A 1D barcode scanner is designed to read traditional barcodes typically found on product packaging, warehouse labels and other locations. These barcodes consist of a single row of vertical lines of varying width and spacing representing numeric or alphanumeric data. 1D barcode scanners are effective for reading these types of barcodes quickly and reliably, and are often more affordable than 2D scanners.

What to consider when choosing a 1D barcode scanner?

Compatibility: Make sure the barcode scanner is compatible with the types of barcodes you need to work with, such as EAN-13, UPC-A, Code 39, etc.

Scanning speed: Choose a scanner that can handle the expected number of barcodes per minute to maintain efficiency.

Durability: If the scanner is to be used in an industrial or warehouse environment, it must be robust and able to withstand shock and vibration. See our robust barcode scanners here.

Connectivity: Pay attention to whether the scanner has the necessary connectivity (e.g. USB, Bluetooth) to integrate with your existing systems.

2D barcode scanners

A 2D barcode scanner is capable of reading both traditional 1D barcodes and more complex 2D barcodes. These 2D barcodes can hold a larger amount of data and can be found on a wider range of products and packaging. In addition to reading barcodes, 2D scanners can also read QR codes, data matrix codes and other types of 2D codes.

What to consider when choosing a 2D barcode scanner?

Functionality: Make sure the scanner supports the types of barcodes and 2D codes you need to work with.

Additional features: Some 2D scanners may offer additional features such as image capture, damage documentation and associated information for the scanned codes.

Software integration: Check if the scanner is compatible with your existing software and systems to ensure seamless integration.

Reading speed: Although 2D scanners are usually slower than 1D scanners, choose a model with sufficient reading speed for your needs.

What is the difference between a 1D and 2D barcode scanner?

The main difference between a 1D and 2D barcode scanner lies in their ability to read and decode different types of barcodes:

1D barcode scanner: A 1D barcode scanner is specifically designed to read linear or one-dimensional barcodes consisting of vertical lines of varying width and spacing. 1D barcodes are typically used to identify products, track inventory and manage pricing in retail.

Examples of 1D barcodes: EAN-13 (European Article Number), UPC (Universal Product Code) and Code 39.

2D barcode scanner: A 2D barcode scanner has the ability to read both linear (1D) and two-dimensional barcodes. These barcodes can contain far more information than 1D barcodes due to their two-dimensional nature. They can contain text, numeric data, URLs, images and even binary data.

Examples of 2D barcodes: QR (Quick Response) codes, DataMatrix and PDF417.

Depending on your business needs and application, choose the type of barcode scanner that best suits your specific requirements for accuracy, speed and mobility. At Delfi Technologies we have a wide range of 1D and 2D barcode scanners with a leading range of everything from wired barcode scanners to presentation scanners and wireless scanners.
