KVICKLY RY - COOP DENMARK
Supermarket in Denmark is first mover in the retail industry
Kvickly Ry is a first mover in the retail industry with electronic shelf labels, OSUMA e-supermarket and much more.
A great curiosity and desire to explore new and different ways of running a supermarket is one of the things that makes Kvickly Ry a first mover in the retail industry. In 2006, Kvickly Ry was the first supermarket in Denmark to introduce electronic shelf labels. It started as a school project that originated from a tenacious and ambitious student, who realized the ESL project when the money for the test and later full implementation was granted by the board at Brugsforeningen TRYG.
As part of an independent cooperative in the Coop family, independence is one of the driving forces at Kvickly Ry. Employees and management take the initiative for a wide range of new and exciting projects. These are all projects that ultimately aim to optimize the supermarket and create a better shopping experience for customers. Electronic shelf labels have been one of the projects, another project is the e-supermarket OSUMA.dk, which is currently owned by Kvickly Ry and can reach 4.5 million Danes with groceries. The next exciting project is already underway and involves a major rebuild with drive-in collection, more square meters for the store, butcher and bakery, as well as a first floor for the ‘Kvickly Cooking School’ project and other exciting activities.
"The biggest argument for electronic shelf labels is undoubtedly to avoid price errors. But image is also a big factor - we are the whole town's cooperative with our members as our owners. Therefore, trust in price is crucial."
MORE TIME FOR CUSTOMERS
At Kvickly Ry, the business case for electronic shelf labels has never been about cutting the number of employees. Instead, from the very beginning, the focus has been on ensuring that all items have a price on them – and that it is the correct price. As a result, it has been possible to shift staff time from the early morning hours with manual and time-consuming work in connection with campaign changes, to later in the day – where customers actually shop, now that prices and campaigns are updated automatically throughout the store.
– The biggest argument for electronic shelf labels is undoubtedly to avoid price errors. But image is also a big factor – we are the whole town’s cooperative with our members as our owners. Therefore, trust in price is crucial. We have also never wanted to cut back on staff. Instead, we have moved our employees from the morning hours to later in the day, when the flow of customers is greatest, so we are ready to meet customers with expertise, advice and guidance,” says Torben Andreassen, Director at Kvickly Ry.
MUCH MORE DYNAMISM AND GREATER FREEDOM
On a day-to-day basis, employees are also experiencing the benefits of electronic signage. One of the areas that has made the biggest impression on both employees and management is the dynamism and ability to turn ideas into reality without having to change paper signs throughout the store.
– For example, when we have the opportunity to run a manufacturer campaign and give customers some unique offers, we don’t have to worry about it being too cumbersome and requiring too much time planning price changes on the shelves. Instead, we just enter the promotion and the prices are automatically updated throughout the store. It’s much more dynamic and gives us much more freedom to create new initiatives. With paper, it would have taken us several hours,” says Jane Holtens, Deputy Manager at Kvickly Ry.
