Food temple eliminates time wasters with simple IT solution
With over 3000 item numbers and handling both retail and wholesale stock, Supermarco, Denmark’s largest importer of Italian specialties, has integrated a simple IT solution that ensures accurate product registration and customs duties. A task that used to be manual and time-consuming – in fact, the task was perceived as a real ‘time waster’ by both staff and management. In connection with the refurbishment of the company’s warehouse in Sydhavnen, management prioritized eliminating the time waster.
Previously, all goods shipped to the wholesale and Supermarco’s retail store in Copenhagen from the main warehouse in Glostrup were registered manually. On the face of it, this was fine, but occasionally a count would get lost in the piles of paper in the warehouse. This made it difficult to make an accurate and documented goods registration and tax. Accurate goods registration is very important to Supermarco for several reasons. The company’s main warehouse in Glostrup is what is called a ‘tax-free warehouse’. This means that once the goods leave the warehouse, tax must be paid and not when they are imported into Denmark. Goods that are subject to tax include beer, wine and spirits. For companies trading in goods that are subject to this tax, it is important to be able to provide a documented and accurate tax calculation to the authorities, otherwise it can be expensive to trade in these goods.
– Previously, when the business was smaller, the challenges were manageable. But with the restoration of our warehouse in Sydhavnen and a significant development in the customer and product base, the manual paper registration became very cumbersome. We consulted our associated IT man Johan Niordson from Genios ApS, and he recommended Delfi Icons, says Karsten Brinkmann, Project Manager at Supermarco
and Ello Foods.
The solution that Johan Niordson referred to is a software application that ensures the registration of goods based on the item’s barcode within tasks such as goods flow, receipt of orders, status, etc. and optimizes the associated work processes. Delfi Icons is divided into modules that can be purchased as needed. The software is integrated via a simple application with the company’s financial system, in Supermarco’s case Microsoft C5.
- My job is to ensure that the 'time robbers' that we can eliminate IT-wise are highlighted. We discussed several times how we could achieve our goals and agreed that it was crucial for us that the solution we chose was simple. That is, that it didn't require too much customization and that it was flexible in terms of potential expansion.
Delfi Icons provides documented data and overview
Johan Niordson started the Delfi Icons integration project in early 2016 with three objectives in mind: solid and secure goods registration, accurate documentation for tax payments, and smoother work processes for the warehouse employees who handle the many goods on a daily basis.
– My job is to ensure that the ‘time robbers’ that we can eliminate IT-wise are highlighted. We discussed several times how we could achieve our goals and agreed that it was crucial for us that the solution we chose was simple. That is, that it didn’t require too much customization and that it was flexible in terms of potential expansion. Based on this and a number of other criteria, we chose Delfi Icons,” says Johan Niordson, who has been with Supermarco for almost 10 years.
The solution consists of a number of Delfi Nova handheld terminals with Wi-Fi function, which are used to scan the goods’ barcodes. The scanner’s Wi-Fi sends the data to the financial system at the same time. The updated data makes it easy to follow the flow of goods, make picking lists and order goods – and not least document the important tax. The data includes item no., quantity and employee ID – all data that makes work processes much smoother and saves time.

More side benefits in solution
The integration of the solution has had several positive effects, including fewer picking errors, more qualified ordering of goods and a much better overview.
– The solution has met our expectations in all respects and has given us the energy to look at other ‘time robbers’ in our business processes. Right now, we have a practical task in testing the purchased Icons module ‘Status’. Hopefully, this module will help eliminate another time waster and make the status
task easier and more flexible than the lengthy manual status we know from before,” says Karsten Brinkmann expectantly.
