Hobbii has knitted together a huge business

Hobbii, which serves knitting-loving Danes, was “Børsen Gazelle 2020” top scorer among 1,885 companies with a growth of 3,167 percent. The enormous growth has been possible, among other things, because Hobbii has chosen technology that supports the processes in the warehouse and in the stores.

Yarn company Hobbii is Denmark’s fastest growing company. In a very short time, they have managed to create a huge business that is supported by modern technology and efficient work processes to handle the expected 1.5 million orders in 2021.

With 9,000 item numbers in their new giant warehouse in Greve, there is a lot to keep track of for the 250 employees in the organization. This is one of the tasks that Delfi Technologies has helped Hobbii solve. An integrated warehouse solution has been delivered for picking goods and efficient package handling via workstations in the warehouse. The solution includes several technologies, including touch screens, mobile phones, barcode scanners and label printers.

STARTED AS AN ECOMMERCE BUSINESS

Hobbii started their journey as a pure online business, but have also started to open more and more physical stores. As Hobbii was born as a webshop, the company is extremely focused on data and processes, paying attention to every detail in the transition from online to physical stores. Here, Hobbii has one goal – for customers to have the same great experience in a physical store as when they shop online. Using modern technologies from Delfi Technologies, Hobbii has succeeded in creating a close link and synergy between the two sales channels.

PHYSICAL STORES WITH AN ONLINE TOUCH

Hobbii’s stores are equipped with various IT solutions from Delfi Technologies to give the customer an extraordinary experience. Prices in the store are always up-to-date with electronic price tags that are connected to their webshop. This is both a resource-saving element, as employees don’t have to worry about changing prices, but also a service point for customers. Customers know with certainty that they always get the same prices, whether they shop online or in stores.

Advanced price checkers are also set up among the yarn racks, giving customers additional information about the products, inspiration for knitting projects and much more. The checkout area is an experience in itself. A stylish area with elegant white checkout systems and barcode scanners that complete the customer’s last impression before they leave the store.

A SCALABLE WAREHOUSE THAT CAN HANDLE THE IMMENSE PRESSURE

In the fall of 2020, Hobbii moved their central warehouse to 10,000 m2 of new storage facilities in Greve. On a good day, more than 10,000 packages are sent out to customers all over the world. Their most important task is to ensure that customers always receive their goods within 48 hours.

– With that number of packages, efficiency is paramount for us in our warehouse. We have more than 9,000 item numbers, so it takes a lot to ensure that the right products get to the right customer at the right time and at the right price,” says Jeppe Kallesøe.

For this to happen, many warehouse employees work in day and evening shifts. With so many different employees in the warehouse, it’s a necessity to have straightforward processes that are also easy to understand so that new employees can easily get into the routines.

FASTER PICKING WITH HANDS-FREE DEVICES

Hobbii has chosen a solution where warehouse employees wear special gloves with an integrated barcode scanner. At the same time, a mobile phone is mounted on the arm with an overview of the picking order. The combination of these solutions provides employees with a good working environment as they have both hands free when picking and packing the goods. The order is also optimized in relation to the structure of the warehouse so that the picking route is as short as possible, which streamlines the entire order handling process.

PACKING STATIONS MAKE ORDER PACKING A BREEZE

Hobbii has 16 packing stations in the warehouse, and at each station the employee can get a quick overview of open orders via a touchscreen where they can see the entire order. From here they can also print shipping labels and finalize the orders. The solutions give the store room to grow as they can scale up and down as needed, which is a further advantage during busy periods leading up to sales, Black Friday and holidays when sales are booming.
